Breadstick Snakes: Fantastic Beasts inspired Food

The new Fantastic Beasts movie is coming out in a couple weeks, which means it’s time to rewatch the first couple! What better way to enjoy a movie than with some themed food? Let’s make some easy snake breadsticks that are so simple to make.

I’m using refrigerated pizza dough for mine to keep things easy. If you have a favorite pizza dough recipe and know how much it rises, feel free to experiment with this recipe and make it even better!

The Concept

You need to cut the dough into ½” strips, about 16” long. I was able to make 12 snakes with 1 tube of refrigerated pizza dough. The tails are made by pinching one end of the strip–I rolled them gently between my hands to help too. The heads are made with a little squishing and pinching. There’s a photo after the recipe to help show what I mean!

The key in the snake shape is how you arrange them before you bake them. Roll up balls of foil and place one in the center of each muffin pan cup. Tip: keep the foil a little loose to make removal easier. I used silicone cupcake liners to prop their heads up higher. You can use anything a similar size that’s oven safe--more foil balls should work too.

I got a little fancy since I knew I’d be taking photos and did an egg wash on mine. This adds a glossy shine to them. Brushing them with melted butter would be a very tasty alternative–it won’t add the gloss, but it’ll be tasty and help with browning.

I added some seasoning to half of mine and I absolutely recommend it. Not only does it add more flavor, it also creates a green texture on the snakes that really suits them. I recommend using an Italian seasoning blend or oregano, as well as some garlic powder.

Breadstick Snakes: Fantastic Beasts inspired Food

These easy snake breadsticks are a fun snack to enjoy during a Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts movie. This recipe uses refrigerated pizza dough for a quick and easy breadstick that’s perfect for kids or for a themed movie night snack.

Ingredients

1 roll Pillsbury pizza dough

1 Tbsp Italian seasoning

1 tsp garlic powder

1 egg (optional)

Method

Prep

Preheat oven to 400F

Roll foil into twelve 2” balls. Tip: keep the foil a little loose to make removal easier. Place a foil ball into each cup of a muffin/cupcake pan. Place silicone muffin liners upside down between the cups to prop the snake heads on.

The Dough

Unroll pizza dough on a large cutting board.

Cut dough into ½” strips lengthwise. You should have 12 strips.

Pinch one end of the strip to make the tail. Squish the other end and pinch to form a snake head shape.

After the ends are shaped, carefully lift a snake and spiral in a muffin cup, starting with the tail and ending with the head. Leave the tail out, spiral around the foil ball, and prop up the head. Repeat with remaining snakes.

Optional: Whisk an egg. Brush each snake with egg.

Sprinkle Italian seasoning and garlic powder on snakes.

Bake for 8 minutes and check on them. Check on how dark they’re getting and if the coiled dough is cooked through. If they’re getting too dark on their heads/tails, cover those parts with some foil. Bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, as needed.

Allow to cool enough to handle. Carefully remove snakes from pan and remove foil ball.

Notes

Serve with a dipping sauce like marinara, garlic butter, or olive oil with herbs.

If you’d like to serve these hot, pop them back into the oven for a minute after removing the foil balls.

If you don’t care too much about looks, skip the egg wash and brush on melted butter instead.
