Tuttle Dogs & Secret Dipping Sauce

Tuttle dogs are a corn dog; with this recipe, you can make them easily at home! Pair it with my chipotle honey mustard for a little heat.

If you’ve been keeping up with the new Tuttle Twins TV show, you know exactly what this is. For those who don’t, let me fill you in!

Tuttle Twins is a crowd-funded TV show for kids. It’s about the Tuttle twins, Ethan and Emily, who travel through time with their grandma Gabby and learn about history, principles of liberty and freedom. It gives me slight Rick & Morty vibes, but much more wholesome and kid-friendly.

In episode 4, Of Business and Benjamins, the twins are looking to start a business. They travel to meet Benjamin Franklin to learn about inventions. I won’t spoil all of it, but in the end they decide to make a corn dog stand at the park for the other kids.

This recipe is my take on “Tuttle Dogs”! If you have a version that you already use, I’d love to hear about it! Comment below with your favorite Tuttle dogs recipe and let's chat.

Easy Corn Dogs

If you’re in a pinch, you can use frozen corn dogs. I promise that making them yourself will change how you see them though! It’s well worth it and easier than you think.

In this recipe you mix together cornbread mix and pancake mix to create a fluffy, sweet and savory batter. You can easily make these vegetarian or vegan by substituting ingredients too. I accidently made mine vegan since I decided to use up some veggie dogs that had been in my freezer for a while and I had just hard-boiled the rest of my eggs for meal prep. I thankfully had flax meal to make an “egg” and it turned out perfectly.

If you aren’t sure what cornbread mix to use, Jiffy is a classic! It has a smooth texture which works well for a batter. For this small batch recipe for 3, you’ll use half the box.

What's in the Tuttle Family Secret Dipping Sauce?

This sauce is tricky. The only thing we know about it is from a quick scene in a montage where Emily and her mom are in the kitchen adding some yellow mustard to a pot on the countertop.

I decided to make my version based on a mustard aioli. You’d cook an aioli if you were making it from scratch, but I decided to keep it easy using pre-made mayo. The family is Hispanic, so I decided to use adobo and chipotle to spice things up. While this is a mild-medium heat, if you or your kiddos aren't a fan of spicy food, you might want to try a different recipe!

Tuttle Dogs & Secret Dipping Sauce

Tuttle Dogs for 3

Corn dogs inspired by Tuttle Twins, made with pancake mix and cornbread mix to an easy meal while you’re watching the latest episode.

Ingredients

1 ¼ cup cornbread mix

⅓ cup pancake mix (plain or buttermilk)

6 hot dogs

6 popsicle sticks

2 T cornstarch

½ egg

¾ cup water

Salt

Oil for frying

Method

Prep

Preheat oil in deep fryer or large pan to 350F.

Insert a popsicle stick into each hot dog. Blot hot dogs with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Roll hot dogs in cornstarch. Set aside.

Place a couple paper towels on a plate for the finished corn dogs.

Mix

Combine cornbread and pancake mixes, egg, water until thoroughly mixed. Pour into a tall drinking glass.

Fry

Check that oil is 350F. Too hot and they won’t cook all the way through, too cold and they’ll get soggy.

One at a time, dip corn dogs into batter and carefully place in oil. You’ll need to work in batches. Fry for 3 minutes, turning occasionally for even browning.

Drain on paper towels.

Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
